But the movie tries to tell its story more so with its images, rather than featuring a real good main plot line or emotions in it.
It does come across a bit as some lazy film-making; 'Don't worry about the script or actors, just place a camera in a room and let the emptiness and remoteness of the scene tell the whole story'.
Sorry, I just really wasn't falling for that. It does make Emily Browning's role also a bit of an ungrateful one.
Ever since she had been appearing in movies and series as a child, it was apparent that she would one day not only grow into becoming a beautiful woman but also a great star and actress.
However after seeing her in this movie it also becomes apparent that she isn't quite ready for it to play a lead role and carry a movie almost entirely on her own.
But all of the blame can't fall entirely on her in this case, since it probably was director Julia Leigh that told her to play her character as a very distant and emotionally bland one.
Seriously, she is hardly ever showing any emotions on her face. You can't really tell if she is ever happy or sad and as a viewer it makes you feel very detached from her.
This is also because she is doing some very unusual and unlikely things in this movie. It never becomes really apparent why she does them and why she is the way that she is.
The movie is not really offering you an exploration into a young woman's mind and her journey in life, on her way of becoming a true woman.
Just like many of its scene's, the movie feels mostly as a very empty and distant one. And what was with here wearing the same type of clothes throughout the entire movie?
She is either wearing a skirt or a dress, with some high boots, or she is either half- or completely naked. Nothing wrong with showing some skin but Emily Browning's body looks like a year old, even while she was 23 at the time.
The clothes she was wearing really didn't seemed to suit her body type and it actually worked quite distracting for me. It made me want to send her some money, so she could buy some pants and normal shoes.
Some people might still get something out of the movie its images or will read deeper into some of the movie its moments but personally I got very little out of this movie.
It was a very empty movie story-wise and an emotionally bland one, that by the end left nothing more than a very redundant impression on me.

Plush Drama Music Romance. Sucker Punch Lucy is paying tuition and rent by doing several jobs. She is caring for a sick relative, Birdmann, who is very attracted to her.
While she does not return his sexual interest, Lucy enjoys Birdmann's company, and in his presence is the only time she is shown smiling or laughing.
An old joke between the two is that Birdmann frequently asked Lucy to marry him; Lucy always says no. Due to lack of money and Birdmann's bad health, Lucy makes a decision to look for another part-time job.
In response to a classified ad for yet another short-term job, Lucy meets Clara, who runs a service that combines lingerie modelling and catering performed by young women at a black tie dinner party for mostly male clients.
Clara assures her that the men are not allowed to touch the women sexually, and Lucy agrees to try it. Clara inspects Lucy's body and names her "Sara" for the purpose of anonymity.
At the dinner party, Lucy is the only girl dressed in white; the other women wear black lingerie that is much more revealing than Lucy's outfit.
After one other session as a serving girl, Lucy gets promoted. She receives a call from Clara's assistant for a different request. Lucy is driven to a country mansion, where Clara offers Lucy a new role wherein she will be voluntarily sedated and sleep naked while male clients lie beside her.
They are permitted to caress and cuddle her, but vaginal penetration is not allowed. After Clara reminds the man of the no-penetration rule, he strips and curls up beside Lucy.
After a few of these sessions, Lucy has enough money to move into a larger, more expensive apartment, where she lives alone.
She receives a call from Birdmann, who has overdosed on painkillers. She goes to his house and finds him dying in his bed.
Sobbing, she takes off her shirt and gets in bed with him, but he dies in her arms. At Birdmann's funeral, Lucy abruptly asks an old friend if he will marry her, in an echo of Birdmann's old playful banter.
The friend, however, not understanding the reference, takes her seriously and, shocked, refuses her, citing a number of Lucy's personal problems as his reasons.
At her next assignment with Clara, Lucy asks if she can see what happens during the sessions while she is asleep.
Clara refuses, saying it will put her clients at risk of blackmail. Lucy decides to surreptitiously film her next encounter. The client is once again the first man, but this time, he also drinks the tea with a much larger dose of the sleeping drug.
The following morning, Clara comes in and checks the man's pulse, showing no surprise when he cannot be awakened. Clara tries to wake Lucy, who has overdosed as well, and is eventually able to revive her using mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Lucy begins screaming when she sees the dead man in bed next to her. The film ends with the scene captured by the hidden camera: the dead old man and the sleeping girl both lying peacefully together in bed.
Writer and director Julia Leigh, primarily a novelist, said in an interview with Filmmaker Magazine that she initially wrote the film without the intention of directing it.

Desire Magic Magic Drama Thriller. A naive young tourist's road trip across Chile with friends turns into a waking nightmare. King Stefan orders all spinning wheels throughout the kingdom be burned.
At the fairies' urging, the King and Queen reluctantly allow Aurora to live with the fairies, hidden in a cottage in the forest.
Aurora, renamed Briar Rose, grows into a beautiful young woman. On her sixteenth birthday, the fairies ask her to gather berries so they can prepare a surprise party.
Aurora befriends the animals of the forest and sings them a song, " Once Upon a Dream ". Phillip, now a handsome young man, follows Aurora's voice and is instantly struck by her beauty and grace.
She is initially startled, as she is not allowed to talk to strangers, but she and Phillip fall in love. She invites him to meet her godmothers at the cottage that evening.
Meanwhile, Flora and Merryweather argue over the color of Aurora's gown, their magic attracting the attention of Maleficent's raven who learns Aurora's location.
Returning home, Aurora is thrilled to tell her guardians that she has fallen in love. The fairies finally tell Aurora that she is a princess, already betrothed to a prince, and she must never see the man again.
Heartbroken, Aurora cries in her room. Phillip tells his father he wishes to marry a peasant girl, despite his betrothal to a princess and he is left devastated.
The fairies take Aurora to the castle to await her birthday celebrations and be reunited with her parents. Maleficent appears and lures Aurora into a dark tower and tricks her into touching the spindle of a cursed spinning wheel.
Aurora pricks her finger, fulfilling the curse only moments before the sun sets. The three fairies place the sleeping Aurora on a bed in the highest tower and cast a powerful spell on everyone in the kingdom, causing them to sleep until the spell on their princess is broken.
After overhearing a sleepy conversation between the two kings, they realize that Phillip is the man Aurora loves. They rush to find him, but Maleficent has abducted him.
She shows Phillip the sleeping Princess Aurora, and says she will lock him away until he is an old man on the verge of death.
Only then will she release him to meet his love, who will not have aged a single day. An enraged Maleficent surrounds the castle with thorns but fails to stop Phillip.
She confronts him directly, transforming into an enormous black dragon. They battle, and Phillip throws the sword, blessed by the fairies, directly into Maleficent's heart, killing her.
Phillip awakens Aurora with a kiss, breaking the spell and waking the kingdom. The royal couple descends to the ballroom, where Aurora is reunited with her parents.
Flora and Merryweather resume their dispute over Aurora's gown while the happy couple dance, living happily ever after.
Eric Larson did not animate any of the characters for the film; instead, he directed the entire "Forest" sequence which stretches from Briar Rose a.
Aurora wandering through the forest with her animal friends all the way to Princess Aurora renamed Briar Rose running back home, promising Phillip they will meet again later in the evening.
This was the only time Larson directed a sequence or a film during his tenure at Walt Disney Productions.
Following the critical and commercial success of Cinderella , writing for Sleeping Beauty began in early Partial story elements originated from discarded ideas for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs including Maleficent's capture of Prince Philip and his dramatic escape from her fortress and Cinderella where a fantasy sequence featured the leading protagonists dancing on a cloud which was developed, but eventually dropped from the film.
During the story rewriting process, the story writers felt the original fairy tale's second act felt bizarre and with the wake-up kiss serving as a climactic moment, they decided to concentrate on the first half finding strength in the romance.
However, they felt little romance was developed between the strange prince and the princess that the storyboard artists worked out an elaborate sequence in which the king organized a treasure hunt.
The idea was eventually dropped when it became too drawn out and drifted from the central storyline. Instead, it was written that Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora would meet in the forest by random chance while Princess Aurora renamed Briar Rose was conversing with the forest animals.
Additionally, because the original Perrault tale had the curse last one hundred years, the writers decided to shorten it a few hours with the time spent for Prince Phillip to battle the goons, overcome several obstacles, and fight off against Maleficent transformed into a dragon.
The name given to the princess by her royal birth parents is "Aurora" Latin for "dawn" , as it was in the original Tchaikovsky ballet.
This name occurred in Charles Perrault 's version as well, not as the princess's name, but as her daughter's.
By April , Sleeping Beauty was scheduled for a February release. Because of the delays, the release date was again pushed back from Christmas to Christmas He wouldn't get the damn thing moving.
The animation style moved away from the Rococo of Cinderella and also does not simply draw on fashion and female beauty standards of the time and draws upon distinctive visual combination of Medieval art imagery and Art Deco design.
Kay Nielsen—whose sketches were the basis for Night on Bald Mountain in Fantasia —was the first to produce styling sketches for the film in When Hench returned to the Disney studios, he brought reproductions of the tapestries and showed them to Walt Disney, who replied, "Yeah, we could use that style for Sleeping Beauty.
Eyvind Earle joined Walt Disney Productions in first employed as an assistant background painter for Peter Pan before being promoted as a full-fledged background painter in the Goofy cartoon, "For Whom the Bulls Toil" and the color stylist of the Academy Award-winning short, Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom.
I took a Hench and took the same subject, and the composition he had, and just turned in into my style. Geronimi commented that he felt Earle's paintings "lacked the mood in a lot of things.
All that beautiful detail in the trees, the bark, and all that, that's all well and good, but who the hell's going to look at that?
The backgrounds became more important than the animation. He'd made them more like Christmas cards. As a result, Geronimi had Earle's background paintings softened and diluted from their distinctive medieval texture.
Before the animation process began, a live-action reference version was filmed with live actors in costume serving as models for the animators in which Walt Disney insisted on because he wanted the characters to appear "as real as possible, near flesh-and-blood.
Anyone worth his salt in this business ought to know how people move. For the final battle sequence, Kemmer was photographed on a wooden buck.
The live-action model for Maleficent was Eleanor Audley , who also voiced the villain. Darling from Peter Pan. Because of the artistic depth of Earle's backgrounds, it was decided for the characters to be stylized so they could appropriately match the backgrounds.
Nevertheless, Walt insisted on the visual design claiming that the inspirational art he commissioned in the past had homogenized the animators.
Production designer Ken Anderson also complained: "I had to fight myself to make myself draw that way. Meanwhile, Tom Oreb was tasked as character stylist that would not only inhabit the style of the backgrounds, but also fit with the contemporary UPA style.
Likewise with Earle's background styling, the animators complained that the character designs were too rigid to animate. She became very angular, moving with more fluidity and elegance, but her design had a harder line.
The edges of her dress became squarer, pointed even, and the back of her head came almost to a point rather than round and cuddly like the other Disney girls.
It had to be done to complement the background. I took the idea of the collar partly from a bat, and the horns looked like a devil.
Veteran animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston were assigned as directing animators over the three good fairies: Flora, Fauna and Merryweather.
Walt Disney urged for the fairies to be more homogeneous, which Thomas and Johnston objected to, with Thomas stating they "thought 'that's not going to be any fun'.
So we started figuring the other way and worked on how we could develop them into special personalities. Cartoons , was employed on the film for four months during its early conceptual stages when Warner Bros.
Cartoons was closed when it was anticipated that 3-D film would replace animation as a box office draw.
Following the failure of 3-D, and the reversal of Warner's decision, Jones returned to the other studio. His work on Sleeping Beauty , which he spent four months on, remained uncredited.
Ironically, during his early years at Warner Bros. Another notable animator who worked on the film for part of its production was Don Bluth , who worked as an assistant animator to Lounsbery.
Bluth would leave after two years but eventually came back in the s. Following the performance, she was approached by Walter Schumann who told her, "I don't want to shock you, but I've been looking for Aurora for three years, and I want to set up an audition.
Would you do it? The next day, she was informed by Walt Disney that she landed the role. George Bruns was recommended to replace Schumann by animator Ward Kimball.
Because of a musicians' strike, the musical score was recorded in Berlin, Germany with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra from September 8 through November 25, Although Bruns took much credit for the score, he derived most of his work from the themes and melodies in Tchaikovsky's ballet Sleeping Beauty.
In anticipation of the film Maleficent , a cover version sung by Lana Del Rey was released by Disney on January The song is considerably darker and more dramatic than the version, given the new film's focus on the villain Maleficent.
The song was debuted in a trailer for the film shown as a commercial break during the Grammy Awards , and was released for free on Google Play for a limited time.
Disney's distribution arm, Buena Vista Distribution , originally released Sleeping Beauty to theaters in both standard 35mm prints and large-format 70mm prints.
The Super Technirama 70 prints were equipped with six-track stereophonic sound; some CinemaScope -compatible 35mm Technirama prints were released in four-track stereo, and others had monaural soundtracks.
The film premiered in Los Angeles on January 29, Like Alice in Wonderland , which was not initially successful either, Sleeping Beauty was never re-released theatrically in Walt Disney's lifetime.
However, it had many re-releases in theaters over the decades. The film was re-released theatrically in , where it was released on standard 35mm film.
From July 9 to August 13, , the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences organized "The Last 70MM Film Festival" at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater , where the Academy, its members, and the Hollywood industry acknowledged the importance, beauty, and majesty of the 70mm film format and how its image and quality is superior to that of digital film.
